“I’m Not Waiting Anymore”: How an Early Autism Evaluation Changed Daniel’s Life

This Autism Acceptance Month, we’re celebrating the incredible people who remind us why this work matters. Every child who comes through our doors carries something unique. A way of seeing the world that no one else has. A talent waiting to be understood. A story still being written.

But that potential doesn’t always show up in the ways we expect. Sometimes it looks like a kid who won’t stop talking about dinosaurs. Sometimes it’s the one who lines up their toys just so, or who hears the hum of a refrigerator from two rooms away. Sometimes it’s the child sitting quietly in the back of the classroom, absorbing everything.

Daniel’s Story

Two decades ago, it wasn’t the norm for kids to be evaluated and diagnosed before age 4 or 5. When Daniel Pollack’s parents started noticing different things about him at 18 months old—repetitive behaviors and changes in his interactions with his mother—they brought it up to their pediatrician. He told them they were overreacting.

A few months later, they brought it up again and pushed for answers. “I walked in and said, ‘I’m not waiting anymore.’ I wished that I had been more proactive at the last visit,” says his mom, Maria Diaz.

They were able to get a full autism evaluation and diagnosis from the Yale Center that changed everything. With the incredible support and advocacy of his parents, Daniel had his best shot at success.

In the beginning, he needed many resources and support. Later, he was able to start spending more time in the regular classroom. As he grew older, the initial support and roadmap from early intervention began to pick up steam, and he grew more independent. Daniel explored his hobbies and enrolled in a competitive aquaculture program. He earned a certificate as the class’s “budding biologist” and completed college-level oceanography—earning college credit before ever setting foot on a campus.

As Maria says it best: “Kids like Danny can grow up and be anything they want to be.”

Why Early Autism Evaluation Matters

Daniel’s story isn’t just heartwarming—it’s a reminder of what’s possible when families get answers early. An early autism evaluation opens doors to therapies, school support, and a roadmap that meets a child where they are. The earlier the diagnosis, the more time a child has to grow with the right tools in place.

If you’re a parent noticing something feels different and your concerns are being brushed off, trust what you’re seeing. Maria’s instincts were right. Yours might be too.
